Bear ShotsBALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 28, 2015)-Morgan State senior guard
Tracey Carrington, who was playing in her final home game of her collegiate career at Hill Field House, finished with 19 points, as the Lady Bears defeated crosstown rival Coppin State, 73-55 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game on Saturday afternoon.
The win helped the Lady Bears end a five-game losing skid and allowed Morgan State to sweep the season series for the first time since the 2012-13 season. Carrington, who improved to 5-3 against Coppin State, grabbed four rebounds, giving her 563, two shy of moving into 10th-place at Morgan State. The Baltimore native also recorded two assists and two steals, which gives her 122 for her career and moved her into 11
th-place.
While it was 'Senior Day' and all about honoring the team's lone senior and team captain prior to the game, it was freshman
Braennan Farrar who nearly stole the show. The 5-foot-6 guard out of St. Louis, Mo., had a coming out party of sorts.
Farrar would score a career- and game-high 25 points, while dishing out three assists and had a game-high three steals to put Coppin State and the rest of the MEAC on notice of what's to come for the next three years.
"There's no stopping us," said Farrar of when she and Carrington are both playing well. "We just have to stay focused and stay positive and come to practice ready to practice hard. We can't take any days off or plays off."
When she wasn't draining three-pointers or driving to the basket, she was putting on a dribbling display, which consisted of a fair share of crossovers that buckled several Coppin State players and had others on roller skates.
Morgan State (10-18, 7-8 MEAC) scored 16 straight points in part of a 23-2 run over a nine minute span to take a 34-14 lead, capped off by a three-pointer from Farrar with 3:41 left to play in the first half.
The Lady Bears would take a 38-21 lead into the locker room and never looked back. Morgan State took its largest lead of the day at 69-45 (24 points) with 4:50 left to play.
The Eagles (5-21, 4-11 MEAC) were led by Jordan Swails, who finished with a team-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and Amber Griffin added 15 points for Coppin State, which has lost three straight and nine of its last 11 games.
Morgan State finished the game shooting 45 percent (24-of-53), while Coppin State connected on 21-of-57 from the floor for 36 percent.
Simone Sampson, who nearly recorded a double-double, had nine points to go with a game-high eight rebounds to help the Lady Bears hold a 40-33 rebounding advantage.
Morgan State will take to the road when it visits the Lady Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in the regular season finale on Thursday, March 5. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center in Princess Anne, Md. UMES was a 68-61 winner over Delaware State on Saturday.
