Cedric Blossom matched a career-high with 26 points,
Rasean Simpson also had a career-high 16 points and Morgan State snapped a three game losing streak by beating Savannah State 67-57 on Saturday.
It was the first regular season meeting between the two teams since Jan. 14, 2013, a 64-61 double overtime victory at Hill Field House.
Blossom led the Bears by shooting 9 of 15 from the floor and connected on 8 of 9 from the free throw line. The last time the junior forward scored 26 points was earlier this season in a win against Florida A&M on Jan. 17 in Baltimore.
Blossom and Simpson each added nine rebounds for the Bears (5-18, 3-6 MEAC), who outrebounded the Tigers by a commanding 43-24 margin and held a 16-2 advantage in second chance opportunities.
Brian Pearson had 12 points on 5 of 5 shooting to lead the Savannah State (5-17, 1-7 MEAC) before fouling out of the ballgame. Terel Hall added nine points and four assists. The Tigers' losing streak extended to three.
Morgan State got off to a solid start during the opening moments and led 10-3 following a jumper by
Blake Bozeman. But the Tigers quickly narrowed the deficit and tied the ballgame at 11 on a layup by Khalen Pinkett.
The Bears used an 8-2 spurt to build a 23-15 lead after a follow-up dunk by Simpson with 4:54 remaining in the half. However, the Tigers responded with a 10-2 run went into halftime tied with the Bears at 25-25.
Savannah State opened the second half scoring with a 3-pointer by Javaris Jenkins that gave the Tigers its first lead of the night at 28-25. From that point forward the teams played to an almost stalemate.
With the game tied at 50-50 with just over 5 minutes remaining, the Bears put together a 10-1 run and back to back layups by Blossom and Simpson gave the Bears a 60-51 lead with 2:07 to play.
The Tigers attempted to close the gap when Demarcus Bryant nailed a three-pointer and was fouled by
Kyle Thomas. Bryant converted the free throw to trim the Bears lead to 60-55 with 2 minutes left, but it was not enough tonight. MSU ended up converting 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch to close out the game.
The Bears had one of its better shooting performances by converting 22 of 51 shots (43.1 percent), but was held to 0 of 6 from three-point territory. Savannah State finished the night shooting 44.4 percent (20-45) and were 4 of 11 from three-point range.
The Bears continue its 4-game homestand on Monday, Feb. 9, when they host South Carolina State at 7:30 p.m.
