Losing Skid Reaches Four Straight; NCCU Defeats Lady Bears, 63-47

DURHAM, N.C. (Feb. 21, 2015)-North Carolina Central senior's Racquel Davis and Khyra Conerly each recorded double-doubles to lead the host Lady Eagles to a 63-47 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory over Morgan State on Saturday afternoon at McDougald-McLendon Gym.

Davis scored a team-high 18 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, while Conerly finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds and added a game-high six assists, as the Lady Eagles ended a three-game losing skid.

NCCU (7-18, 5-8 MEAC), which improved to 4-7 all-time against Morgan State, has now won two straight over the Lady Bears and three of the last four meetings at McDougald-McLendon Gym against Morgan State.

Morgan State (9-16, 6-7 MEAC), which never led in the game, received a game-high 19 points from freshman Braennan Farrar, who also totaled a game-high five steals. Senior captain Tracey Carrington finished with 12 points and had six rebounds to tie teammates Dinah Jones and Lexus Spears for team-high honors in rebounds. Jones and Spears each scored four points to go with their six rebounds.

While it wasn't the type of homecoming that Morgan State freshman and Durham native Tykyrah Williams wanted to have – going scoreless on six attempts and fouling out – she did record four rebounds and dish out a team-high three assists.

NCCU, which held a 31-19 advantage at the intermission, used a 20-7 spurt over the course of 11 minutes to take its largest lead of the contest (21 points), 51-30 with 7:37 left to play in the game.

Morgan State would get as close as 12 points (59-47), after going on a 17-8 run in five-and-a-half minutes, capped off by two free throws by Carrington with 2:07 remaining, but would get no closer.

The Lady Bears, who struggled all around on Saturday, shot 27.7 percent (18-of-65) for the game, including just 1-for-10 from three-point range. Morgan State's woes also carried over at the charity line, where it connected on just 50 percent (10-of-20) of its free throws.

NCCU shot 23-of-65 (35 percent) for the game and was just 3-of-15 (20 percent) from three-point range. The Lady Eagles hit 14-of-21 attempts (66 percent) from the free throw line.

The host Lady Eagles dominated the boards, out rebounding Morgan State 61-41. NCCU held a 32-18 advantage over Morgan State in points in the paint and tallied 24 second chance points.

The Lady Bears conclude their road trip with a match-up in Greensboro, N.C. against the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T. Tip-off is Monday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. at the Corbett Sports Center.
