Late Free Throws Lifts Wagner past Bears, 62-61

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Romone Saunders entered the ballgame in the second half and scored nine points, including the first of two free throws with 3.2 seconds to help lift Wagner to a 62-61 victory over Morgan State on Wednesday night at the Spiro Sports Center.

After Phillip Carr's 3-pointer made it 61-57 for Morgan State (2-5), Wagner (3-2) outscored the Bears 5-0 in the last two minutes.

Dwaun Anderson sank two free throws and Michael Carey made a layup to tie at 61-61 with just under a minute left. In the final minute, Carr missed a 3-pointer and, after Saunders' go-ahead free throw, Clive 'C.J.' Vaughan Jr. rebounded the missed second foul shot but missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
 
Corey Henson led all scorers with 17 points for the Seahawks (3-2), who posted a victory in their first ever meeting against the Bears. Anderson added 13 points and Michael posted nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
Phillip Carr led the Bears with a season-high 17 points on 5-for-9 shooting and was a perfect from the free throw line (5-5 FT). The sophomore also grabbed eight rebounds to go along with two assists and a block. Vaughan and Kyle Thomas scored 12 points each.

The Bears went into halftime up 24-23.

Next Up: Morgan State will end a three-game road swing Sunday against the 17th-ranked Cincinnati Bearcats. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m at Fifth Third Arena.
