@MorganStAthleticsDAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Quentin Williams threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score as #25 Bethune-Cookman pulled away from Morgan State 38-14 Saturday at Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach, Florida.
The Bears (3-5, 3-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) trimmed the B-CU lead to 21-14 at halftime, but the Wildcats went on to score 17 unanswered points.
Williams cued the onslaught in the second half, throwing a 44-yard touchdown to Frank Brown. He finished 16-of-19 with 257 yards and gained 73 yards on 10 carries with a touchdown. Uriel Hernandez added a 23-yard field goal in the third quarter to extend the lead to 31-14 in the third quarter.
B-CU's (7-2, 5-1 MEAC) backup quarterback Larry Brihm ran for a 4-yard TD early in the fourth quarter. Brihm finished as the game's leading rusher by posting 87 yards on just eight carries for the Wildcats (10.9 avg.).
The Wildcats opened scoring when Michael D. Jones capped an 11-play, 90 yard drive when he took an option pitch and raced 8-yards for a TD. Uriel Hernandez' extra point gave the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 4:41 left in the first quarter.
Morgan State's defense helped setup the Bears' first score of the game when redshirt senior linebacker
Joel Scott recovered a fumble by Anthony Jordan at the B-CU 31 yardline. It only took six plays before
Orlando Johnson turned the corner and juked his way for a sensational 9-yard TD run.
Chris Moller tacked on the extra point to tie the ballgame at 7-7 with 9:17 left in the second quarter.
Johnson finished with 16 carries for 63 yards, but the Bears offense was limited to total of 59 yards on the ground.
Williams completed a 15-yard pass to Jontavious Carter to help setup a 3-yard TD run up the middle by Jordan to help retake the lead for the Wildcats' at 14-7.
On the Bears' ensuing possession,
Moses Skillon was intercepted by B-CU safety Michael Drayton who returned it 30-yards to paydirt to give the Wildcats a 21-7 advantage with 3:39 left in the half.
Skillon rebounded when he engineered a 13-play, 75 yard drive and tossed a 10-yard TD pass to a wide-open
Landen Malbrough (5 rec., 40 yds) in the back of the endzone. The Bears went into the halftime trailing 21-14.
Skillon completed 20-of-40 passes for 227 yards and was picked off twice by Marquis Drayton.
B-CU, the MEAC's top-ranked offense, rolled the Bears for 600 total yards (297 passing, 303 rushing). The Wildcats finished with 30 first downs, compared to MSU's 12.
Sophomore linebacker Damare Whitaker led the Bears with 13 tackles and a sack, while junior cornerback
Deadrick Jones added a season-high 12 stops.
