Morgan State Knocks Off Rival Howard In Battle of MEAC Unbeatens, 3-1

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 2, 2015)-The Morgan State volleyball team extended its season-long winning streak to four straight, following a 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-18, 25-19) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division victory over rival Howard on Friday evening in a match-up of unbeatens at Hill Field House.

With the win, Morgan State improved to 3-0 in league and reached the play for the first time since the 2006 squad began 5-0 and reached the MEAC title match. Howard's season-long winning streak came to an end at two straight with the loss.

The Lady Bears (6-11, 3-0 MEAC) were led by Arianna Hayden, who posted a match-high 16 kills and had eight digs, while Keana Browne added 14 kills and Evely Macedo added 13 kills and eight digs. Minja Rankov finished with a match-high 14 digs and Samantha Prescott fell shy of a double-double with 10 digs and nine kills. Carmen Fernandez had a match-high 34 assists, while Minne Masoe added 18 assists.

Howard (5-13, 2-1 MEAC) was led by Khaila Donaldson, who totaled 14 kills and added nine digs, falling shy of her eighth double-double of the season. Morgan Marlbrough finished with 10 digs, while Tamia Dockery and Briana Jackson recorded 17 and 16 assists, respectively.

Morgan State set the tone early with 19 kills in the opening set and a .421 hitting percentage. The Lady Bears would also hit for .368 with 18 kills in Set 3 and held the Lady Bison to just six kills and a .038 hitting percentage in the fourth set.

The Lady Bears finished the match with 59 kills and a hitting percentage of .271, while the guests tallied 42 kills and a .203 hitting percentage. Both teams struggled with their serving. Howard did slightly better with four aces, but committed 10 serving errors. Morgan State finished with two aces and had 13 serving errors.

Howard held a 7.5-5.0 blocking advantage for the match over Morgan State. Donaldson led the Lady Bison with four blocks, including two solos. Morgan State was led by Browne, who finished with three blocks, including a solo. 

The Lady Bears will be off until next Friday, Oct. 9, when they host the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in a MEAC Northern Division match at 7 p.m. at Hill Field House.
