Lady Bears Defeat Howard In Prince Hall Masonic Classic, 77-64

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 31, 2015)-The Morgan State women's basketball team, which was coming off a 12-day layoff since its last game, returned to action on Saturday and defeated host Howard, 77-64 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game at Burr Gymnasium. The game was also the third annual D.C. Prince Hall Masonic Classic.

Morgan State (7-12, 4-3 MEAC) received a game-high 25 points from Tracey Carrington, who led four Lady Bear players in double figures scoring. Braennan Farrar scored 18 points and Lexus Spears added 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Dinah Jones added 11 points, as Morgan State recorded its second consecutive road victory at Howard.

Howard (2-18, 2-5 MEAC) was led by Victoria Gonzales, who scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Sydni Johnson tallied 20 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Cheyenne Brown totaled 10 points in the loss.

The game started off with the Lady Bison hitting one of two free throws to take a 1-0 lead before the game even started, due to an administrative technical assessed to Morgan State. That would be the only time the Lady Bears trailed on the scoreboard, as the Lady Bears would score the next six points and held an 18-11 lead after a jumper by Simone Sampson with 11:53 to play until the half.

Howard would pull within 26-23, following a basket by Gonzales with 7:10 to go, but the Lady Bears responded with six straight points to up their lead to 32-23. The hosts would not go away and used an 8-0 run to again pull within three points (34-31) with 2:26 left.

Morgan State would hold the hosts scoreless the remainder of the half, while going on a 5-0 spurt to take a 39-31 lead at the intermission.

The Lady Bears took their largest lead of the game of 19 points (72-53) when Spears scored on a layup with 5:39 to play.

Morgan State finished the game shooting 31-of-65 (47 percent) for the game, while Howard shot 40 percent (23-of-57).

The Lady Bears head crosstown to face rival Coppin State in the annual "East vs. West" game on Monday, Feb. 2. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. at the Physical Education Complex.
