Samantha Prescott totaled a team-high 11 kills, eight digs and had two blocks in win over Loyola Maryland.
Box Score LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 20, 2014)-Separated by three miles, local foes Morgan State and Loyola Maryland would end up traveling nearly 200 miles to resume their rivalry after a year hiatus on Day 2 of the Red Flash Classic, hosted by Saint Francis-Pa.
Samantha Prescott would total a team-high 11 kills, add eight digs and two blocks, while Carmen Fernandez fell shy of a double-double with a match-high 31 assists and nine digs, to lead Morgan State to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-19) sweep of Loyola Maryland on Saturday morning at Degol Arena.
Arianna Hayden finished with nine kills and just one error in 18 attempts for a team-high .444 hitting percentage, while Zuri Smith notched eight kills. Dinah Jones, who last night set a career-high 16 kills against host Saint Francis-Pa., chipped in with six kills.
The win was the Lady Bears' first of the weekend and evened their tournament mark to 1-1. The victory also ended a five-match losing skid to Loyola and improved Morgan State's overall record to 14-13 against the Greyhounds. It was also the first win over Loyola since a 3-0 sweep at home on Sept. 5, 2006. Loyola fell to 0-2 on the weekend.
Loyola (1-11) was led by Stacey Kazalas, who finished with a match-high 12 kills, while Micah Duzey led the Greyhounds' defense with a match-high 16 digs. Jane Lukas tallied nine kills and eight digs and Lauren Anderson finished with 25 assists in the loss.
Morgan State (6-6), which a day earlier committed a season-high 32 attack errors, only had nine against the Greyhounds. The Lady Bears would record 35 kills on 87 attempts for a .299 hitting percentage.
The Greyhounds finished with 34 kills, but had 20 attack errors on 95 attempts for a .147 hitting percentage. Loyola would also commit 13 service errors for the match.Â
As a team, the Lady Bears tallied 5.0 blocks, while holding Loyola without a block. Jones and Prescott each had two blocks, including one solo, while Hayden added a solo block. Smith and Fernandez both recorded an assisted block.
Morgan State will return to the court with a 5 p.m. match against George Mason. This will be just the second meeting all-time between the two teams with the Patriots holding a 1-0 series lead.
