R-Junior LB Christopher Robinson recorded four (4) sacks during the Bears win Saturday.
Box Score HighlightsBALTIMORE, Md. –
Lee Hull's Morgan State Bears steamrolled the Bulldogs in the second half and cruised to a 28-3 win on a rainy Saturday at Hughes Stadium before a crowd of 4,238.
Herb Walker Jr. and
Robert Council each ran for a pair of touchdowns, and Morgan State (1-2) posted its third win victory against Bowie State and improved to 6-4-1 against the Bulldogs since 1980.
The victory also marked
Lee Hull's first as Morgan State's head coach. It marked the third largest margin of victory against the Bulldogs in the series.
"Offensively, we made mistakes and had penalties that in the last two games we did not have," Hull said. "I don't know if the guys underestimated them, but all week long, I told them that they had to come here with guns blazing and that it was going to be a dogfight if we left them in the game. The good thing is, the second half, we came out, made some adjustments and we ended up scoring. I thought they did a good job of focusing offensively and defensively."
Council was just 2 of 10 passing for 18 yards, but it was his running that helped power a second-half surge by the offense.
After trailing at halftime by a score of 3-0, the Bears turned its first possession of the third quarter into points.
Following a
Thomas Martin 16-yard punt return, Walker ripped off 39 yards on his first carry of the quarter. Two plays later Council raced in for a 6-yard touchdown.
Chris Moller's extra point gave the Bears a 7-3 lead.
Council capped a 6-play, 48-yard drive by plowing into the endzone for a 7-yard TD. The redshirt-senior finished the day with 73 yards on 12 carries.
Walker, who finished with a school record 271 yards a week ago at Holy Cross, was sitting on 100 yards by the end of the third quarter. The sophomore added two touchdowns for the Bears late in the fourth quarter and finished with 20 carries for 180 yards.
Strong safety Paul Eatman intercepted quarterback Matthew Googans and returned it 38 yards deep in Bowie territory. On the ensuing play, Walker raced 28-yards to help extend the Bears lead to 21-3.
On the Bears next possession, Walker raced to paydirt for an exciting 33-yard TD to put the finishing touches on Morgan State's first win of the season.
Linebacker
Christopher Robinson had a solid game for the Bears by finishing with five tackles, four sacks and a pair of quarterback hurries. The redshirt-junior was a sack shy of the school record for sacks held by James Dozier (4.5 sacks vs. N.C. A&T, 1989).
"The thing that counts is going out there and doing what you've been coached to do," said
Christopher Robinson, whose four sacks almost matched his career total of five. "In the second half, we came out and tried to be stricter and hone up on doing our jobs. That's what helped us. Our goal is to go out there and play assignment football. Fortunately, we were able to do that for the most part."
The Bears, who led the MEAC in total offense (446 ypg), was held to 296 yards, but rolled for 278 yards on the ground.
Bowie State (0-2) posted 318 total yards and rushed for 179 yards. Googans was 14 of 38 passing for 139 yards. Kendall Jefferson led the Bulldogs ground attack with 94 yards on 21 carries.
The Bulldogs took its opening drive of the game and marched 69 yards on 17-plays, but were limited to a 37-yard field goal by Mario Diaz-Aviles to give his team a 3-0 advantage with 3:14 remaining in the first quarter.
The Bears will face the Howard Bison next Saturday at the New York Urban League Classic in East Rutherford, N.J. Kickoff at MetLife Stadium is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
