Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 12, 2014)-Arianna Hayden recorded a double-double with a team-high 13 kills and a team-high 14 digs to lead Morgan State past host Providence, 3-1 (25-17, 25-17, 13-25, 25-17) on Friday night at Alumni Hall on Day 1 of the 10th Annual Friar Classic.
Morgan State (3-5), which improved to 4-0 all-time against Providence, also received a double-double from Carmen Fernandez, who finished with a match-high 35 assists and 12 digs. Samantha Prescott tallied 10 kills and eight digs, while Tamara Leslie totaled 10 digs and had three assists in her first match of the season.Â
Providence (0-9) was led by Kayla Fitzgerald, who had a match-high 15 kills and nine digs. Michelle Cruz had a match-high 16 digs, while Jordan Wiesler finished with 27 assists.
After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, including a set-high .409 hitting percentage in the opening set, the Lady Bears had a .000 hitting percentage in a Set 3 loss. Morgan State would finish the match with a .174 hitting percentage (45 kills, 24 errors), while the Friars would record 33 kills and also had 24 errors for a hitting percentage of .073 for the match.
The Lady Bears, who have struggled this season with its team blocking, held a 9.0 to 6.0 advantage over Providence in blocks. Hayden led the way with a match-high six blocks, while Dinah Jones finished with four and Zuri Smith added three. Providence was led by Nicole Fletcher, Annie Russian and Abigail Dix all had two blocks for the Friars.
Morgan State return to action on Saturday, Sept. 13 when it takes on Quinnipiac in a non-conference match at 12:30 p.m. The Bobcats (1-7) dropped a 3-2 decision on Friday to Fairleigh Dickinson, after holding a 2-0 advantage.
