BALTIMORE, Md. -- Morgan State Bears Head Coach
Lee Hull has named six assistants to his initial coaching staff. Four of the six are former head coaches at either the college or high school level.
Hull named John Morgan assistant head coach,
Dwayne Foster offensive line coach, Kenny Lucas running backs coach,
Fred Farrier offensive coordinator,
Jamari McCollough wide receivers and
Brawley Evans as defensive backs coach.
The Bears coaching staff also includes returning coaches
LeAndre Creamer (defensive line coach) and Harold "Sport" Benton (special teams/tight ends).
Offensive coordinator Frederick FarrierFarrier enters his first season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Bears. Prior to joining the Bears, Farrier was the passing game coordinator at RPI (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) for a pair of seasons. Farrier, a graduate of The College of the Holy Cross, was also head coach of Kentucky State from 2005 to 2009. He coached the Thoroughbreds to an average of over 30 points and 375 yards per game. He also had a punting unit that earned national rankings and saw nearly 30 student-athletes capture post-season honors for either athletic and/ or academic achievements.
A wide receiver for the Crusaders, Farrier also has college experience at Shaw University, where he was the associate head coach and offensive coordinator; Tennessee Technological University and Saginaw Valley State University as the recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach; and Michigan State University, where he was a graduate assistant. Farrier, who is originally from Cleveland, Ohio, has also had fellowship coaching opportunities in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals. He is a frequent presenter at the American Football Coaches Association Convention.
Assistant Head Coach John Morgan, Jr.Morgan is a veteran coach of 20 seasons, including the last three years at North Carolina Central where he was the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. Prior to joining the Eagles in 2011, Morgan spent a season at Delaware State as the inside linebackers coach and two seasons (2008-09) as head coach at Friendly High School in Fort Washington, Md.
A native of Washington, D.C., and two-time graduate of Bowie State University, Morgan directed NCCU's 2007 defense to national Division I-FCS rankings of No. 6 in pass defense, No. 10 in pass efficiency defense and No. 18 in total defense. He spent three seasons (2003-05) as head coach at Fort Valley State University, amassing a 22-11 overall record.
Morgan had two stints at his alma mater, first as defensive and recruiting coordinator (1995-98) and then again for two seasons (2001-02) as associate head coach and defensive and recruiting coordinator. He has also made coaching stops at Salisbury State (1999), Morgan State (2000) and Maryland (2006).
As a student-athlete at Bowie State, Morgan was an All-CIAA performer his freshman campaign and broke the school record for tackles in a season with 133 takedowns in 1992.
Offensive line coach Dwayne FosterDwayne Foster joined the Bears coaching staff after spending three seasons at North Carolina Central where he was the assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and offensive line coach. He was also the interim head coach for the Eagles during the 2013 season.
Prior to working at NCCU, Foster spent six seasons (2005-2010) at Prairie View as the offensive line and running backs coach. He was also the offensive line coach for Bowie State in 2003. In between those stints, he was the tight ends and running backs coach at Catholic University in his hometown Washington, D.C.
Foster started his coaching career as head coach at his alma mater, Archbishop Carroll High School, from 1997-2003. During his successful tenure, he was named the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1998.? A 1993 graduate of Delaware State University, Foster helped lead the Hornets to two MEAC football championships.
Running backs coach Kenneth LucasLucas enters his first season as Morgan State's running backs coach. Prior to joining the Bears, Lucas was the head coach at Annapolis Area Christian School (AACS). Lucas spent seven seasons at AACS where he led the Eagles to three consecutive Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association titles from 2009-2011. He earned Anne Arundel County Coach of the Year honors in 2009 and led AACS to the Annapolis Touchdown Club's Team of the Year award following its undefeated championship season in 2010.
Lucas also was head coach at Gonzaga College and Archbishop Carroll High Schools, both in the Washington, D.C. area, and is a former assistant coach at Georgetown University.
He has also served as secondary coach for the 2012 U.S. Under-19 National Team, assembled by USA Football.
Defensive Backs coach/Recruiting coordinator Brawley EvansEvans enters his first season as defensive backs coach at Morgan State. Evans previously spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Maryland under head coach Randy Edsall. He assisted the Terps defensive coaches, working primarily with the linebackers, and also assisted in recruiting and scouting opponents.
Prior to his stint with the Terps, Evans was the defensive backs coach at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. During his four-year tenure, the Falcons won three straight WCAC championships and ranked nationally in USA Today (2009, 2010 and 2011). His first coaching position came as head junior varsity coach and offensive coordinator at Baltimore Lutheran School in 2008.
Before pursuing a career in coaching, the Baltimore native spent two years as an all-conference running back at West Liberty State in West Virginia. He also gained all-conference honors at Southwestern Junior College in Chula Vista, California.
The Baltimore native attended Dundalk High School where he was an all-state running back for the Owls. He earned his degree in criminal justice from West Virginia State and is working toward completing a master's degree from Maryland.
Receivers coach Jamari McCollough McCollough has been named as Morgan State's wide receivers coach. McCullough previously coached three seasons at St. Frances High School in Baltimore. As offensive coordinator, the Panthers led the state of Maryland in scoring in 2011 and 2012. His teams won 20 consecutive games and posted a 33-5 record in three seasons. McCollough also coached the defensive backs for the Panthers.
McCollough was an All-ACC defensive back for the University of Maryland. He led the Terps in interceptions in 2008 and 2009, and was selected Defensive Captain in 2009. He has a bachelor's degree in Family Sciences from Maryland (2010).
The Baltimore product was a prep standout at Randallstown High School. He was a two-time all-state performer and was the No. 17 ranked cornerback in the nation in 2005.
Hull also continued to fulfill his commitment toward building a bridge between former almuni and his current team.
Joining Hull's staff will be former Morgan State football letterwinners:
Robb Johnson (Assistant Defense),
Roderick Chapman (Assistant Offense) and
Eric Fair (Assistant Offensive Line).
"Our staff is excited to add these three former Bears to our program," Hull said. "They bring expertise in several positions and being a former Morgan State players they understand the competitiveness of the conference. Their energy and enthusiasm will be a great addition to our program."
The Bears will conclude its 2014 spring drills when they kickoff the Annual Blue-Orange Spring Game on Saturday, April 26. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Hughes Stadium.
