Lady Bears Drop Fifth Straight; Fall At Hampton, 63-43

HAMPTON, Va. (Dec. 8, 2014)-Ryan Jordan scored a game-high 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting and Tyler Hobgood pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to lead host Hampton to a 63-43 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory over Morgan State on Monday evening at the HU Convocation Center.

The win was the MEAC opener for Hampton (3-5, 1-0 MEAC), which recorded its ninth straight victory over the Lady Bears and improved to 27-11 all-time against Morgan State.

Morgan State (2-7, 0-2 MEAC) was led by Braennan Farrar, who scored a career-high 16 points to lead the Lady Bears, who have now lost a season-long five straight.

For the first time in four games the Lady Bears were able to avoid a huge second half scoring spurt by its opponent, which in the previous three games would put the game out of reach. Tonight the Lady Bears hung with the Lady Pirates in the second half, only getting outscored by a point at 29-28. The only problem for Morgan State was the huge scoring outburst by Hampton happened in the first half.

Morgan State scored the game's first points on a layup by Lexus Spears 21 seconds into the game. A layup by Farrar with 13:55 left in the first half tied the game at 8-8, the third and last tie of the game.

Hampton would get a three-pointer from Kyani White to break the tie and trigger a 23-3 run over the next 10 minutes to take a 31-11 advantage with 2:22 to play. The Lady Pirates held a 34-15 lead at the intermission.

Morgan State shot 29 percent (14-of-47) from the floor and was just 1-for-9 (11 percent) from three-point range. The Lady Bears did shoot 56 percent (14-of-25) from the charity stripe, while Hampton went to the free throw line seven times and missed them all.

The Lady Pirates connected on 28-of-67 (41 percent) from the floor and hit 7-of-21 (33 percent) from three-point range. Hampton had 19 assists with Malia Tate-DeFreitas recording a game-high six. The Lady Pirates also had 13 steals, while Morgan State had just five assists and six steals for the game.

Morgan State returns home for the final time in 2014, when they play host to Stony Brook in a non-conference game on Saturday, Dec. 13. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Hill Field House.
