Lady Bears Come Up Short In MEAC Opener, 68-63

NORFOLK, Va. (Dec. 6, 2014)-Rae Corbo scored a game-high 25 points and Kayla Roberts scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds to record a double-double, as Norfolk State defeated visiting Morgan State, 68-63 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest on Saturday evening at Echols Hall.

The Spartans (2-5, 1-0 MEAC), who have won three straight over Morgan State and four of the past five meetings, improved to 19-13 all-time against Morgan State with the win.

Morgan State (2-6, 0-1 MEAC), which has now dropped a season-long four straight games, fell to 5-5 in MEAC openers over the past 10 seasons. The Norfolk State contest also marked just the fifth time in 16 seasons that the Lady Bears did not open the conference slate against crosstown rival Coppin State.

Playing without its leading scorer in senior Tracey Carrington, who was out battling an injury, the Lady Bears turned to its freshmen to provide the scoring.

Lexus Spears scored a season-high 15 points and tied a team-high with seven rebounds to lead Morgan State. Eva Myers tallied a season-high 13 points, knocking down all four of Morgan State's three-pointers, while fellow freshman guard Braennan Farrar added 10 points and dished out a game-high five assists.

The Lady Bears led by as much as eight points twice in the first half, with the last coming on a jumper by Tykyrah Williams with 4:50 to play, giving the guests a 25-17 lead. Morgan State would hold a 29-23 advantage at halftime.

Myers began the second half hitting a three-pointer to give the Lady Bears their largest lead of the game at 32-23 with 19:52 to play.

But has been the case in Morgan State's previous three games, the Lady Bears have allowed their opponents to go on big runs during the second half. Saturday evening wouldn't be any different, as a layup by Aivah Parham with 13:07 remaining, capped off a 20-4 spurt by the host Spartans, giving them a 43-36 lead.

The host Spartans held their largest lead of the game at 12 points (56-44) when Roberts converted on a free throw to complete a three-point play with 7:33 left in the game.

Morgan State would go on a 17-7 run in nearly six minutes to pull within two points at 63-61, following two free throws by Farrar with 1:50 left in contest. But that would be as close as the Lady Bears would come, as the host Spartans upped the lead to five points twice to hold on for the victory.

The Lady Bears will conclude their trip to the Tidewater area with a MEAC match-up on Monday, Dec. 8 against defending tournament champion Hampton. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center in Hampton, Va. The Lady Pirates (2-5, 0-0 MEAC) were a 64-53 winner on the road on Saturday evening at Richmond.
