BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 20, 2014)-Coming off a 40-point (90-50) victory over Wesley, which it shot a season-best 47 percent just two days ago, the Morgan State women's basketball team would shoot a season-low 25 percent in a 66-44 non-conference win over Washington Adventist on Thursday evening at Hill Field House.
The Lady Bears (2-2) shot 21-of-83 for the game, including just 1-of-16 (6 percent) from three-point range against the Shock, an NAIA opponent. Tracey Carrington scored a game-high 21 points to move into seventh-place all-time at Morgan State with 1,218 points and added a team-high nine rebounds in the win. Braennan Farrar scored 13 points and Tykrah Williams chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.
"Today's game was disappointing to me because we were very sloppy," said Morgan State head coach Donald Beasley, who is now four wins shy of becoming the program's all-time coaching leader. "The intensity wasn't there and I don't know if it's because we played so many games (close together), but I was unhappy with today's performance and even Tracey [Carrington] came out and played slow. I have to revaluate and go back and pick it back up. It was very bad today, very bad."
Unlike Tuesday's home opener, the Lady Bears came out uninspired and took awhile to get going. Morgan State, which missed its first four attempts to start the game, took a 10-0 lead after Carrington hit a three-pointer with 14:12 to play. The Lady Bears would hold a 32-12 lead at the intermission.
The Lady Bears would use a 15-5 run to extend their lead to 60-26 (34 points), its largest lead of the game with 5:40 remaining in the game. The Shock would not quit, as they closed out the game on an 18-6 spurt for the games' final score.
The Shock (2-3) got a double-double from Courtney Jenkins, who finished with 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Jenkins also had a game-high four blocks. Courtney Cayard also scored 11 points, while Chelsey Scott added nine.Â
Morgan State forced a season-high 40 turnovers, while recording 24 steals. Farrar led Morgan State with a game-high five steals and Carrington and Eva Myers each tallied four steals.Â
The Lady Bears will return to non-conference action when they visit Texas Tech on Sunday, Nov. 23. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. CT at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas.
