BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 2, 2014)-Arianna Hayden tallied a team-high 10 kills and added 10 digs to record her fourth double-double of the season, as the Lady Bears defeated visiting Delaware State, 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-16) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match on Sunday afternoon at Hill Field House.
The win was the second straight for Morgan State (13-11, 6-5 MEAC) and its seventh consecutive win over the Hornets, who have now dropped their eighth straight match this season.
Morgan State's victory secured the team's spot in the upcoming MEAC championship tournament for the first time since 2011. It also assured the Lady Bears a winning record during the regular season for the first time since the 2006 squad went 22-8.
Evely Macedo finished with eight kills and eight digs, while Zuri Smith also totaled eight kills and a .533 hitting percentage in the win over the Hornets. Carmen Fernandez recorded a match-high 31 assists, eight digs and four kills for a hitting percentage of .571, as Morgan State swept the season series and improved to 36-14 all-time against Delaware State.
Delaware State (1-23, 1-8 MEAC) was led by Jasmine Jackson, who had a match-high 11 kills and a team-high six digs. Natalia Mendieta finished with 13 assists, while Ariana Stevens had a match-high three service aces.
Morgan State finished the match with 43 kills on 91 attempts for a hitting percentage of .352. Delaware State finished with a hitting percentage of .169 with 29 kills on 89 attempts and 14 errors.
The Lady Bears held a 6.0-5.0 advantage in blocks over Delaware State. Dinah Jones had a match-high four blocks for Morgan State. Hayden and Smith each added two blocks. Smith is now three blocks away from passing Janelle Wilson (227 blocks from 2010-13) for eighth all-time at Morgan State. The Hornets' Jae Jackson finished with a match-high four blocks.Â
The Lady Bears will close out the regular season on Friday, Nov. 7, when they host beltway rival Howard in the season finale at Hill Field House. The match will be Senior Night for two Lady Bears, Zuri Smith and Tamara Leslie, who will be playing in their final home contest for the orange and blue. First serve is at 7 p.m.
