Carrington, Spears Help Lady Bears Tame Wesley; Harrington Sets Record

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 18, 2014)-The Morgan State women's basketball team returned home on Tuesday evening for its 2014-15 home opener and defeated Wesley College, 90-50 in a non-conference game at Hill Field House. It was the most points scored by Morgan State since last season's meeting against the visiting Wolverines, a 90-55 victory for the Lady Bears on Nov. 20, 2013.

Tracey Carrington scored a game-high 27 points to move past Adrienne Bond (1,190 points from 1982-86) for eighth place in scoring at Morgan State with 1,197 career points. Carrington would also add nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Lexus Spears, who missed the majority of the Lady Bears' last game at Georgia Tech after suffering an injury, returned to the starting lineup and scored a season-best 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, also a season-best to earn her first collegiate double-double.

Morgan State (1-2) which improved to 6-4 in home openers over the past 10 years, also got a strong offensive outing from Ivy Harrington, who continued her hot shooting Tuesday evening, coming off the bench to finish with 12 points. Harrington, who just two days earlier shot a career-best 9-for-9 from the field at Georgia Tech, connected on her first four shots against the Wolverines, to set the school record for consecutive baskets made (two or more attempts per game) at 14 straight.

Harrington began the streak in the opener against Georgia (11/14) when she scored on her final attempt of the game. Harrington's streak would end on Tuesday at the 6:07 mark of the first half, when she missed on her fifth attempt, a jumper from the right side. She would finish the game shooting 6-of-8 from the floor, while adding a game-high five steals, three rebounds and a block against Wesley.

Wesley (1-2) was led by Brionna Johnson, who finished with a team-high 18 points and had 10 rebounds for a double-double. Brittney Kerns finished with 10 points, including going 8-for-8 from the free throw line, while Alexis Stroud came off the bench to second eight points and had a team-high three assists.

The Lady Bears opened up the game scoring the first nine points, with Spears doing damage inside, scoring the first five to start the run. After Wesley finally got on the board following two free throws by Brionna Johnson with 16:30 to play, Morgan State went on a 25-10 run over the next nine minutes to take 34-12 advantage.

The Wolverines would cut the deficit to 16 points (38-22), after Roniece Williams knocked down two free throws with 3:47 to play, but the Lady Bears closed out the half on a 10-0 run to take a 48-22 lead at the intermission.

Morgan State's lead blossomed to 36 points (61-25) when Carrington hit a three-pointer to cap off a 13-3 run with 16:13 remaining in the game.

Wesley would not go away, as behind seven straight free throws, the Wolverines used a 14-4 run to pull within 65-39 with 10:30 p.m. Morgan State would counter with a 23-4 run over the next 8:26 to take its largest lead of the contest (45 points) at 88-43 with 2:04 left in the contest.

Morgan State shot a season-high 47 percent (33-of-77) from the floor and 31 percent (6-of-19) from three-point range. The Lady Bears connected on 18-of-30 from the free throw line for 60 percent.

Wesley shot 23 percent (12-of-52) from the floor and was 5-of-26 from three-point range for 19 percent. The Wolverines did shoot 75 percent (21-of-28) from the free throw line.

The Lady Bears forced 30 Wesley turnovers, including 17 steals and converted those into 36 points. However, Morgan State had 20 turnovers, which Wesley turned into 12 points.

Morgan State had 19 assists for the game with Braennan Farrar leading the way with a game-high nine assists. Wesley had seven assists.

The Lady Bears will conclude their two-game homestand on Thursday, Nov. 20 when they host the Washington Adventist Lady Shock in a non-conference game at 5:30 p.m. at Hill Field House. The Lady Shock ended a two-game losing skid on Tuesday with a 52-44 victory at Messiah. Courtney Cayard led WAU with a game-high 22 points.
