BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 3, 2014)-Morgan State junior Samantha Prescott would assume the setting duties at the start of the second set from starting setter Carmen Fernandez, who got injured late in the opening set of Friday evening's volleyball match against Norfolk State.
Prescott would respond by recording a double-double with a career-high 27 assists and a match-high 12 digs to help lead Morgan State to a 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-22, 25-20) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division victory over the Spartans at Hill Field House.
Fellow juniors Arianna Hayden tallied a team-high 12 kills and Dinah Jones had a team-high .375 hitting percentage, while recording 11 kills in the victory.
Morgan State (9-7, 2-1 MEAC) improved to 18-5 all-time against Norfolk State with the win and ended a four-match losing skid to the Spartans. It was the Lady Bears' first win against Norfolk State since a 3-2 win at Norfolk on Oct. 28, 2011.
Norfolk State (0-15, 0-3 MEAC) was led by Maryland native, Dominique Parker, who finished with a match-high 13 kills and had a .391 hitting percentage. Angie Darcus finished with 12 kills and Darcy Moore recorded a double-double with a match-high 33 assists and a team-high 11 digs. Adriana Ramos finished with 10 digs.
The Lady Bears held a 10.0-2.0 advantage in team blocks. Zuri Smith led the way with a match-high six blocks, giving her 34 blocks on the season and 211 for her career. Jones finished with four blocks to tie her with Smith for second on the team this season.
Morgan State, which went 2-1 on its three-match homestand, will now take to the road this Sunday, Oct. 5, when it travels to Dover, Del. to battle another winless team in Delaware State. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. at Memorial Hall. The match will be the first of six consecutive contests for Morgan State away from Hill Field House.
The Hornets (0-12, 0-2 MEAC) are coming off a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-17) non-conference loss at home to New Jersey Institute of Technology on Friday evening. Nevershi Ellis and Jae Jackson led Delaware State with seven kills apiece, while Ayanna Lee finished with a team-high 10 digs. Natalie Medieta and Taylor Marshall tallied 13 and 10 assists, respectively.
