Norfolk State Celebrates First Win; Defeats Morgan State In Four Sets

NORFOLK, Va. (Oct. 24, 2014)-Zuri Smith tallied a match-high 13 kills, but it wasn't enough, as the Lady Bears dropped a 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 22-25, 22-25) decision at host Norfolk State on Friday evening in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division match at Echols Hall.

The loss was the first three-match losing skid of the season for Morgan State (11-10, 4-4 MEAC), while the Spartans (1-19, 1-7 MEAC) earned their first win of the season and ended a 20-match losing skid dating back to last season.

Jessica Johnson and Clarke Tyler finished with nine kills apiece and Kayla Cason recorded a match-high 10 digs for the Spartans. Angie Darcus had 22 assists and Alex Irizarry totaled 15.

Morgan State got 34 assists from Carmen Fernandez and Samantha Prescott tallied a match-high 10 digs in the loss.

Both teams struggled in the service department, as Morgan State had 10 errors and only two service aces. The Spartans totaled 11 service errors, but also managed to collect 10 aces with Adriana Ramos finishing with a match-high three.

Morgan State did hold a 9.0-7.0 advantage in blocks over Norfolk State. Morgan State's Dinah Jones finished with a career- and match-high seven blocks, while Darcus recorded a team-high four blocks for the hosts.

The Lady Bears return to action on Sunday, Oct. 26, when they visit defending MEAC champion and division leader, Hampton in a MEAC North match at 3 p.m. at Holland Hall. The Lady Pirates defeated Coppin State, 3-1 on Friday.
