Janelle Wilson recorded a match-high 14 kills and
Samantha Prescott added a double-double with 12 kills and a team-high 18 digs, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Bears dropped a hard fought 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 25-15, 25-21, 11-15) loss to crosstown rival Coppin State on Friday evening in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener for both teams at the Physical Education Complex.
Coppin State (4-11, 1-0 MEAC) was led by Ariel Richard and Cindy Okpegbue, who both tallied 13 kills each. Gabrielle Otero finished with a match-high 19 digs, while Chelsee Sauni had a team-high 45 assists for the Eagles, who ended a four-match losing skid.
Morgan State (5-9, 0-1 MEAC), which had its season-long two-match winning streak snapped, got 10 kills from
Zuri Smith and a near double-double out of
Haley McClure, who finished with 13 digs and nine kills.
Ngebui Chafeh notched a match-high 49 assists and added nine kills and eight digs, falling shy of a double-double and a possible triple-double.
The Lady Bears had seven service aces in the match with McClure recording a match-high four aces and Wilson adding three. However, the guest also committed 12 service errors.
Coppin State recorded four aces led by Nicole Malave's two, but had nine service errors as a team.
Both teams had a 6.0 block total for the match.
Arianna Hayden and Smith each tallied three blocks for the Lady Bears, while Wilson contributed two blocks, giving her 193 for her career. Kandace Thomas led Coppin State with three blocks.
The Lady Bears return to action on Sunday, Sept. 29, when they travel to Hampton, Va. to take on the Lady Pirates of Hampton. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Holland Hall.
