Lady Bears Sweep St. Francis-NY; Finish Friar Classic In Second-Place

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 22, 2013)-The Morgan State volleyball team closed out the ninth annual Friar Classic and their non-conference slate on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-22) sweep of St. Francis-N.Y. at Alumni Hall. The win was the Lady Bears second straight over the weekend, as Morgan State finished the tournament in second-place with a 2-1 record. The Lady Bears lone loss came to eventual champion Howard on Friday.

Ngebui Chafeh led the Lady Bears with a match-high 27 assists and a match-high 10 digs to record a double-double, while Samantha Prescott added a match-high 10 kills and added eight digs for Morgan State, which improved to 5-0 all-time against St. Francis-N.Y.

Morgan State (5-8) finished the match with a hitting percentage of .202, including a .320 hitting percentage in Set 1. The Lady Bears tallied 11 kills on 25 attempts and had just three errors in that set.

St. Francis-N.Y. (4-12) was led by Domenique Gerard and Niehely Sosa, who both finished with five kills apiece. Erica Lakata had a team-high five digs and Alexa Caporuscio led the Terriers with 13 assists. The Terriers finished the match with a .111 hitting percentage with 27 kills on 81 attempts and 18 errors.

Morgan State had a season-high 11 service aces with Janelle Wilson leading the way with three. The Terriers had four service aces.

Both teams totaled 5.0 blocks for the match. Sosa had a team-high three blocks for St. Francis-N.Y., while Zuri Smith had a match-high five blocks to lead the Lady Bears.

The Lady Bears will now turn their focus to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play. Morgan State will travel to crosstown rival Coppin State on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Physical Education Complex. The match will be the MEAC opener for both teams. Last season the two teams split the season series, each winning on the other's home floor.
