PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 22, 2013)-The Morgan State volleyball team opened up the ninth annual Friar Classic with a heartbreaking 3-2 (25-23, 30-28, 16-25, 23-25, 10-15) non-conference loss to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Howard on Friday evening at Alumni Hall. The match did not count toward the MEAC standings.
The Lady Bison, who improved to 9-4 with the win, were led Assata Conway's match-high 20 kills and match-high six blocks. Howard would also get double-figure performances out of Destinee Harrison (15 kills), Katherine Broussard (13 kills) and Stephanie Shultis (10 kills). Shultis would also add a match-high 58 assists to record a double-double. Allyson Lods led the Lady Bison with 28 digs.
Morgan State (3-8), who has now dropped two straight to Howard, was led by
Arianna Hayden, who finished with a double of a match-high 14 kills and 11 digs.
Samantha Prescott also recorded a double-double with a team-high 21 digs to go with 12 kills.
Ngebui Chafeh finished with 41 assists for the Lady Bears, who are in the midst of a three-match losing skid.
The Lady Bears, who have played from behind all season, jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over Howard and seemed as if they would cruise to victory. It was Morgan State's first 2-0 lead over an opponent of the season. But the Lady Bison would not go away, claiming a 25-16 victory in the third set, followed by a tough 25-23 win in Set 4 to force a final set. In the end the Lady Bison would walk away with a 15-10 in the fifth set to pull off the comeback win.
Howard finished the match with 71 kills and a hitting percentage of .232, while holding a 10.0-6.0 blocking advantage over Morgan State. The Lady Bears recorded 55 kills and had a .141 hitting percentage. The Lady Bison had six service aces, but committed 15 service errors. Morgan State had four aces and seven service errors.
Morgan State will look to end its losing streak when it takes on host Providence on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 9 a.m. The Lady Bears are an all-time 2-0 against the Friars.
