Morgan State Drops Season Finale To Coppin State, 12-8

BALTIMORE, Md. (May 5, 2013)-The regular season came to an end for the Morgan State softball team, as they dropped a 12-8 decision to crosstown rival Coppin State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game on Sunday afternoon at Coppin State Field. The loss completed a series sweep for the Eagles, who on Saturday eliminated Morgan State from the league tournament, following a 9-1 and 6-0 doubleheader sweep.
 
Coppin State (16-23, 9-9 MEAC) jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the first inning and took a 6-0 lead after two innings.
 
Morgan State (8-35, 5-10 MEAC) would not go away easy, getting two runs back in the third inning, when senior Danielle Lugo doubled down the left field line to score Shareday Christina and Kimberly Fontaine.
 
After a solo home run by Danielle Smith in the fourth inning increased the hosts lead to 7-2, Morgan State responded with four runs in the fifth to pull within 7-6. Kimber Salvas singled to score Lugo and Taylor McDougall hit a three-run homer to left field, which hit three-fourths of the way up the protective net, cutting the deficit to a run.
 
Morgan State went back to work in the sixth inning, when Christina doubled to center field, scoring Shanice Crowder and Lugo reached on an error, which scored Christina giving the Lady Bears their first lead of the game at 8-7.
 
The lead would be shortlived, as Coppin State responded with a five-run fifth inning, including a two-run single by Alyssa Barker for the 12-8 victory.
 
Christina led Morgan State with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, two runs scored, a walk and RBI. McDougall was 1-for-3 with 3RBI and Lugo tallied 3RBI, while going 1-for-4 at the plate. Jordan Eades recorded a game-high five strikeouts.
 
Coppin State was led by Smith, who went 3-for-5 and scored three runs for the Eagles. Smith moved into second-place on the Coppin State single-season hit list with 47. Melli Richardson picked up the win for Coppin State in relief and Samantha Denlinger collected her second save of the season.
