Lady Bears Open MEAC Series With Five Inning Shutout Of Howard, 8-0

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 21, 2013)-Morgan State kept its bats hot from it's outing Wednesday at Mount St. Mary's, by scoring eight runs on 10 hits in the opening game of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader against Howard on Sunday at Lois T. Murray Field. The Lady Bears would score at least one run in each of the five innings to defeat Howard, 8-0 in five innings to end the game early on the eight-run rule.
 
Eight of the nine Morgan State batters recorded at least a hit and juniors Shareday Christina and Taylor McDougall both led the Lady Bears with two hits. Christina finished 2-for-2 with a game-high four runs scored and two walks, while McDougall was 2-for-3 with 2RBI and a walk.
 
The Lady Bears quickly got on the scoreboard with two runs in the first inning against Howard. Kimber Salvas flied out to center field to score Christina for the first run and McDougall tripled to left field to score Tiffany Rubin, giving host Morgan State a 2-0 lead.
 
Already leading 3-0, Morgan State extended its cushion to 6-0 with two more runs in the third. Zina Constancia homered to center field for the first run of the third and Danielle Lugo hit a triple to left field to drive in two more runs.
 
Morgan State added another run in the fourth on a fielding error by the Howard shortstop, which allowed Salvas to score the seventh run of the game for the hosts.
 
McDougall then ended the game in the fifth inning when she singled up the middle to score Christina for the eighth and final run.
 
Jordan Eades picked up the win for Morgan State to improve to 2-13 on the season. Eades pitched all five innings, surrendering three hits and five walks. She also recorded a game-high six strikeouts.
 
Howard was led by Anasia Stinson, who finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Jenny Ly went 1-for-2 to collect the Lady Bison's third and final hit.
