Morgan State Swept By Norfolk State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BALTIMORE, Md. (April 14, 2013)-Morgan State was potentially three outs away from possibly ending a 17-game losing skid or forcing extra innings. Instead a two-run homer by Norfolk State's Nikki Jones in the top of the seventh inning propelled the visiting Spartans to a 4-2 victory over Morgan State in the nightcap of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field.

The Spartans (18-18, 11-1 MEAC), who swept the three-game weekend series, also claimed the first game of the day, 7-2.

The Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Morgan Boyd scored on a passed ball and Kathy Cortez later doubled to score Alina Moriarty.

Morgan State responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning when Shareday Christina singled up the middle to score Zina Constancia and Kimberly Fontaine to even the score at 2-2.

The score would remain tied and a defensive struggle until the seventh inning when Melina Valles doubled to left field to start the inning. Jones then stepped to the plate and homered to center field to the game winner.

Jones would finish the game going 2-for-3 with 2RBI and a run scored. Boyd would add a 2-for-4 hitting performance and a run scored. Stephanie Wheatley pitched a complete game for the Spartans to earn the victory and improve to 1-1 on the season. Wheatley allowed two runs on six hits and recorded two walks and a strikeout.

Morgan State (2-30, 0-9 MEAC) was led by Fontaine and Constancia, who both went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run score. Christina drove in a team-high 2RBI, while going 1-for-3 in the game.

The Lady Bears will look to end their 18-game losing skid when they step away from MEAC competition on Wednesday, April 17, when they visit Mount St. Mary's in a non-conference doubleheader in Emmitsburg, Md. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
