Spartans pulls away late to defeat Morgan State, 64-59

Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – Morgan State entered tonight's ballgame attempting to do something no other team in the conference has been able to so far this season – beat Norfolk State.
 
But there would be no upset celebration tonight as conference standout Pendarvis Williams had a game-high 22 points to lift Norfolk State past the Bears 64-59 at Hill Field House.
 
Brandon Goode added 12 points for the Spartans (14-10, 9-0), who have won eight straight games.
 
Trailing 59-54 with 3 minutes to play, senior DeWayne Jackson made a layup to cut the deficit to 59-56, and then Tauron Bailey made a free throw to bring the Bears within two, 59-57, with 2:04 remaining.
 
After Williams' layup with 30 seconds left pushed Norfolk State's lead to 61-57, junior Justin Black (12 pts) made a jumper with 24 seconds left to bring the Bears back within two, 61-59.
 
Morgan State (6-13, 3-5) missed two 3-pointers and had one turnover in the final 21 seconds while the Spartans converted three free throws to ensure the victory.
 
Jackson finished with 18 points for the Bears, who have lost three in a row. Redshirt-junior Anthony Hubbard had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
Norfolk State shot 43 percent the floor and scored 12 points in transition baskets, while limiting the Bears to just 18 of 61 (29%) shooting from the field and 3 of 14 from 3-point territory.
 
Hubbard scored a basket to knot the ballgame at 14 apiece at the 12:05 mark. From that point the Spartans reeled off nine unanswered points and a layup by Rashid Gaston gave NSU a 21-14 lead with 8:01 left in the half.
 
MSU closed the half outscoring the Spartans 8-to-4 punctuated by a fastbreak alley-oop to DeWayne Jackson from Justin Black at the buzzer. The Bears trailed 31-26.
 
Bear Notes
The Bears had one of its better shooting nights from the free throw line where they went  20 of 29 from the stripe.
 
In the battle of 7-footers, MSU's Ian Chiles (7-2) finished with 4 points and seven boards and two blocks, while NSU's Brandon Goode (7-0) finished with 12 points, five boards and two blocks before fouling out of the ballgame.
 
Tauron Bailey had a career-high 9 rebounds
