Tiffany Rubin broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer to left centerfield in the fourth inning to lead Morgan State to a 3-0 non-conference victory over host Tennessee State on Day 1 of the TSU Tiger Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Rubin's homerun would be her only hit of the game, as she finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and 2 RBI.
Taylor McDougall also went 1-for-3 with a run scored and
Nicole Holguin finished with a 1-for-3 performance and drove in a run.
Jordan Eades, who picked up her first win of the 2012-13 campaign, would improve to 1-2 on the season for Morgan State. Eades would allow four hits and three walks, while recording six strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Both teams entered the contest winless with identical 0-7 records and behind good pitching and defense the game seemed as if extra innings would be needed.
But Tennessee State (0-8) would commit the lone error of the game in the top of the fourth inning, which proved to be costly. Morgan State's Sharday Christina led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error by the Tigers' shortstop. Two batters later Rubin stepped to the plate and belted her second homer of the season.
The Lady Bears (1-7) would add their third and final run of the game in the sixth Holguin singled to right field to score McDougall for the 3-0 victory.
Morgan State finished the game scoring three runs on five hits and had no errors. Tennessee State had four hits with no runs scored and an error.
Ashley Haynes led the Tigers with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate. Kiarra Freeman (1-for-3) and Kacie Daugherty (1-for-2) each had a hit apiece.
Morgan State returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 24 for Day 2 of the TSU Tiger Invitational. The Lady Bears will take on Bradley at 9:30 a.m., before closing out the day with a non-conference game against IUPUI at 11:30 a.m. Both games will be played at Tiger Field.
