MSU Collapse Leads to Hornets Win, 52-50

Box Score DOVER, Del. – The Morgan State Bears came out early with blazing hot shooting and led by as many as 16-points before Delaware State came from behind to hand MSU a 52-50 loss in Dover on Monday night.

Morgan State saw its 3-game winning streak snapped as the Bears fall to 9-14 overall and 6-6 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.
 
The Bears jumped out early in tonight's game, shooting 50 percent from the field and 4 of 7 from beyond the arc, while holding the Hornets to a frigid 7 of 34 shooting (20 pct.). Morgan State held a 29-15 lead going into halftime.
 
But tonight would be the proverbial tale of two halves as the Bears came out in the second half shooting the ball cold and struggled in their half court offense.
 
After shooting 12 of 24 from the field in the first half, the Bears were a less than impressive 25 percent (6-24) from the floor. The Hornets also got back in the ballgame by scoring 17 points off of MSU turnovers.
 
Morgan State's top two scorers senior DeWayne Jackson (14.2 ppg) and junior Justin Black (14 ppg) were held to 10 points apiece. Freshman Donte Pretlow chipped in 9 points.
 
Tahj Tate scored 12, including a straightaway 3-pointer with 57 seconds left that put the Hornets up 51-50.
 
Following a missed 3-pointer by DeWayne Jackson with 6 seconds to go, DSU's Cahli Thomas was fouled with 3.7 seconds left to play. Thomas ended up hitting the first free throw to put the Hornets up 52-50. He missed the second free throw and it was rebounded by Blake Bozeman who raced down and missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
 
Morgan State outscored its host 11-0 run during a 5-minute stretch and a layup by DeWayne Jackson extended the Bears lead to 26-10 with 5:26 left in the first half.
 
Tyshawn Bell's 3-pointer with 9:23 mark was the last basket scored by the Hornets.
 
Delaware State (12-13, 7-4) was held scoreless for almost 7 minutes before DSU guard Casey Walker finally connected on a three-pointer with 2:43 left to go to trim the Bears' lead to 26-13.
 
Marques Oliver hit a layup as part of a 13-3 run by the Hornets in the second half and trailed the Bears 39-38 with 9:51 left to play.
 
Delaware State tied the game at 45-45 when Tyshawn Bell hit a corner 3-pointer with 5:26 left to play. When Tate hit the back end of two free throws, the Hornets took their first lead of the ballgame at 46-45 (5:00).

The Bears have a 4-5 record in games decided by 4 or less points so far this season.

Anthony Hubbard fouled out for just the second time this season.

MSU outscored the Hornets in the paint by a 20-14 margin.
