SAVANNAH, Ga. (Feb. 10, 2013)-The weekend did not conclude on the high note that the Morgan State softball team had hoped for, as the Lady Bears dropped back-to-back losses to National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) teams on Sunday in the Lady Tiger Softball Tournament hosted by Savannah State University.
With today's losses coupled with yesterday's doubleheader loss to host and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) South Division foe Savannah State, the Lady Bears went winless for the weekend and fell to 0-4 on the season.
Morgan State first dropped a 6-0 decision in the morning to Sun Conference member Thomas University, before dropping a 10-2 decision to another Sun Conference member in South Carolina Beaufort in the afternoon. Both games were played at Lady Tiger Field on the Savannah State campus.
In the first game, Thomas, which was coming off an appearance in last season's NAIA National Championship tournament, improved to 3-0 on the season with the victory over Morgan State.
The Night Hawks broke a scoreless game with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. With two outs Thomas' Amber Steadman struck out looking, but reached first on a passed ball from the Morgan State catcher. Two batters later Brittany Mayhill hit a three-run homerun over the left field fence.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, Thomas went back to work adding a run in the fifth on a RBI double from Taylor Nicolosi, which scored Mayhill for a 4-0 lead. The Night Hawks then added two more runs in the sixth inning when Leeanna Monk hit a two-run homerun down the left field line for the game's final score.
Thomas finished the game scoring six runs on eight hits. Nicolosi led the Night Hawks with a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored and a game-high 4RBI. Monk went 1-for-1 with a run and 2RBI and Mayhill scored twice.
Morgan State was led by
Shareday Christina, who went 2-for-3 on the day for the Lady Bears, who tallied six hits in the game.
