DOVER, Del. -- Seth Higgins accounted for a pair of touchdowns and Lamont Brown III ran for a career-high 132 yards as the Bears beat the Delaware State 31-26 on Saturday's season finale at Alumni Stadium.

Brown had 18 carries and got the Bears on the board first on a 32-yard run early in the first quarter (9:29). Junior quarterback Seth Higgins rushed for 117 yards and completed 7 of 12 passes for 80 yards.

Morgan State (5-7, 5-3 MEAC) avenged last year's 28-23 loss to Delaware State, and completed the season by winning five of it last seven games.

The Bears, who were predicted to finish 10th in the MEAC preseason poll, finished tied for 3rd place by posting a 5-3 conference record.

"You had two young teams who played well on both sides of the ball," said MSU head coach Donald Hill-Eley. "With Delaware State having a young team, and us having a young team, and the way that game goes… it just goes to show what kind of competition lies ahead."

The Bears led 10-6 at halftime. But the Hornets' Cory Murphy threw three touchdown passes in the second half to overtake Morgan State by one.

With less than five minutes left in the game, Higgins marched Morgan State 57 yards and took the ball in himself from four yards to put the Bears up five points with 46 seconds left on the clock.

Hill was impressed with his team's game-winning drive.

"The kids were unwavering. They had poise and went in it and played like they've been there before. It was good just to see them go down and make their plays and execute the way they did to come away with the victory."

Cory Murphy threw for 379 yards and three touchdowns for the Hornets (5-6, 5-3). Kicker Mitchell Ward had both an extra point and field goal attempt blocked by Morgan State standout cornerback Joe Rankin in the second quarter.

Rankin completed his collegiate career with another solid effort. The senior not only registered two blocks on special teams, he also finished with eight solo tackles and recorded an interception – the 13th of his career – two shy of matching the school record posted by Joe Fowlkes (15 INTs).

Morgan State finished with 365 yards of total offense, including 285 yards on the ground. The Hornets racked up 441 yards.

Brown's career-high 132 rushing yards with two TDs improved his rushing mark to 708 yards and five touchdowns for the season.

"Lamont did a great job of running the ball, being patient and running north-south. It was good to finally see him come into the mold of getting consistent yards."
