Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 25, 2013)-Goda Jankauskaite totaled a match-high 22 kills to lead visiting Norfolk State past Morgan State, 3-2 (12-25, 25-20, 25-23, 19-25, 15-13) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division match on Friday evening at Hill Field House.
Norfolk State (9-14, 5-3 MEAC) moved into sole possession of third-place in the league standings with the win, while sweeping the season series from the Lady Bears.
Morgan State (9-12, 4-4 MEAC), which suffered its first home loss of the season, dropped into a tie for fourth-place with rival Coppin State, which upset top seed Hampton on Friday in five sets. Only the top four teams in the division advance to the league championship.
Samantha Prescott totaled a team-high 18 kills, while
Zuri Smith added 10 kills for the Lady Bears, who also had their season-long four-match winning streak come to an end.
Ngebui Chafeh had a match-high 45 assists and added 10 digs to record a double-double, while
Arianna Hayden finished with a team-high 14 digs.
The Spartans managed to overcome a slow start and 30 attack errors to defeat the Lady Bears for a fourth consecutive time. Morgan State now leads the all-time series, 14-4. Coralie Jarema finished with 10 kills, while Noelle Eagles notched a match-high 15 digs. Darcy Moore tallied a team-high 44 assists in the win for Norfolk State.
The Lady Bears finished the match with a .314 hitting percentage with 57 kills and 20 errors on 118 attempts, while Norfolk State hit for a .157 with 55 kills on 159 attempts and 30 errors. Morgan State held a 9.0-8.0 blocking advantage with Smith and
Janelle Wilson each having four blocks. Wilson is now 19 blocks away from moving into seventh all-time at Morgan State. Norfolk State was led by Jarema, who had a match-high five blocks.
Morgan State will welcome Hampton (13-9, 7-1 MEAC) to Hill Field House on Sunday at 3 p.m. in what is now a critical league match for the Lady Bears. The Lady Pirates' loss to Coppin State on Friday, gave Coppin State the tiebreaker over Morgan State. The Lady Bears will need to defeat Hampton to regain the tiebreaker.
