Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 17, 2013)-The Morgan State volleyball team ended a seven-year, 12-match losing skid on Friday evening to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), following a 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 25-19) victory over the Lady Hawks in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division match at Hill Field House.
Samantha Prescott recorded a match-high 16 kills,
Janelle Wilson had 12 kills and
Zuri Smith tallied 10 kills with a team-high .643 hitting percentage, as Morgan State picked up its first win over UMES since Nov. 9, 2006.
Arianna Hayden tallied a career-high 19 digs and
Ngebui Chafeh finished with a match-high 50 assists to help the Lady Bears remain unbeaten at home in three matches.
UMES (2-14, 1-3 MEAC), who has won the past two consecutive MEAC championships, was led by Haley Robinson, who finished with a team-high 14 kills. Jingqiao Li finished with a team-high 13 digs and Sonia Rosales tallied 34 assists for the Lady Hawks, who have now dropped two straight and six of their last seven matches.
The Lady Bears (7-11, 2-3 MEAC) finished the match with a .345 hitting percentage with 55 kills on 110 attempts and 17 errors. Morgan State also had six service aces, but committed 11 service errors.
The guests recorded 43 kills on 116 attempts with 24 errors for a hitting percentage of .164. UMES totaled 10 service aces and had eight service errors.
Morgan State held a 6.0-2.0 advantage in blocks with Wilson leading the way with five. Chafeh and
Shanotta Bawek both had two blocks. UMES was led by Lauren Berry, who had two blocks.
The Lady Bears will be off until next Friday, Oct. 18, when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on the Lady Bison of Howard in a MEAC match at 7 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium.
