BALTIMORE, Md. – It took an extra 10 minutes of play, but Morgan State lost a fierce Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference battle, 78-70, in double overtime.
 
With the loss, the Bears drop to 4-9 (1-1 MEAC), while Savannah State improves to 8-9 (2-1 MEAC). The Tigers also improved its record against Morgan State to 2-0.
 
After an early deficit for Morgan State, the game was close until the very end, with 11 ties and 15 lead changes.
 
Savannah State, the defending MEAC regular season champions, needed a pair of three-pointers by standout guard Preston Blackmon in the last 26 seconds to help send the ballgame into the second OT.
 
In the second OT, Blackmon hit his eighth 3-pointer to help spark a 7-0 run by the Tigers.  A basket by forward Rashad Hassan gave Savannah State a 74-67 cushion with 3:13 left to go and the Bears were never able to trim the gap.
 
“Blackmon made plays and made plays down the stretch,” said MSU coach Todd Bozeman. “We have a defense where we were switching, and on those last two occasions our guys didn't switch and do what they were supposed to do. We wanted to at least contest the shots.”
 
Blackmon scored 15 of his game-high 41 points after regulation, setting a Savannah State school record for points in a Division I game.
 
Morgan State shot 45 percent on the night, including 21 of 32 (65%) shooting from the free throw line.  Justin Black and DeWayne Jackson finished with 18 points each, and Ian Chiles added 14.
 
Morgan State needed a layup by Ian Chiles in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime.
 
The Bears were out-rebounded by a 40-30 margin.

The Bears will continue the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule when they travel to face the Hampton Pirates (5-10, 2-0) at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the HU Convocation Center.
