HAMPTON, Va. – Hampton's Christopher Tolson hit 4-of-4 free throws in the final minute to help seal a 68-63 win Monday night in an ESPNU televised matchup at the HU Convocation Center.
Tolson scored 19 points to lead the Pirates (8-14, 4-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), who took control of the game late in the second half and withstood last second baskets by Morgan State's
Larry Bastfield.
Morgan State (5-15, 3-5) led for most of the game and held a 31-28 halftime advantage despite sporadic play by both teams.
DeWayne Jackson came out in the second half and scored 15 of the Bears' first 19 points. He hit three 3-pointers during a 3-minute stretch, including one on a fastbreak to give MSU a 50-47 lead with 9:07 left.
But the Bears had trouble keeping the Pirates off the glass. MSU was outrebounded by a 46-39 margin and Hampton scored 18 points off of second chance opportunities.
Standout forward
Kevin Thompson was saddled with foul trouble for most of the night and went to the bench with four fouls at the 8:04 mark of the second half. The Pirates made their move while he sat on the sidelines.
Mike Tuitt drilled a 3-pointer to give the Pirates a 62-57 lead with 3:03 to go. Thompson was fouled on a putback and hit 1-of-2 free throws and Bastfield scored on a layup as MSU trailed 62-60 with 56.2 seconds to go.
The Pirates answered when Tuitt dribbled in for a layup, but Bastfield responded with a scoop lay-in with 14.2 seconds left to play as the Bears trailed 64-62.
Tolson was fouled and sent to the line for a one-and-one with 12.5 seconds to go. He stepped up and nailed both free throws.
On the ensuing possession, the Bears inbounded the ball to Jackson who drove to the paint and was fouled by Wesley Dunning with 8.5 seconds to go. Jackson hit 1-of-2 and the Bears were forced to foul with 7.1 seconds left. Tolson iced the game with another pair of free throws to help the Pirates come away with the win.
Jackson scored a game-high 24 points (7-12 FG) and
Aric Brooks matched his career-high by scoring 18 points and led the team with seven rebounds. The Bears were limited to 19-for-63 shooting (30 percent), while Hampton shot 42 percent (25-59) and hit just 2-of-11 3-pointers for the game.
Hampton made 16-of-25 free throws (64 percent), including 10-of-13 from the stripe in the second half.
