UMBC 3, Morgan State 0
BALTIMORE, Md. (Sept. 3, 2011)-For the last three years, for some reason playing at home has been a problem for the Morgan State Lady Bears' volleyball team. The Lady Bears last winning season at home was a 7-5 mark during the 2007 season.
Since then Morgan State has gone just 5-17 at home and had hoped to correct that issue this season, starting with Saturday afternoon's home opener and Battle of Baltimore finale against the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC).
However, it was all UMBC early on and the visiting Retrievers would hold on to defeat Morgan State, 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-19) at Hill Field House. Hannah Schmidt tallied a match-high 12 kills and Hallie Carter added a double-double with a match-high 18 digs and 10 kills.
The Retrievers (5-3), who finished the Battle of Baltimore Tournament in second-place with a 3-1 record, received a 36-assist performance by Alexandria Spaay. UMBC held an 8-2 advantage over Morgan State in blocks, with Dalton Tolliver collecting a match-high five.
Morgan State (2-4), which went 0-3 for the second consecutive year in the Battle of Baltimore Tournament, was led by Ngebui (Natalie) Chafeh's nine kills, while Erin Cox added eight kills and nine digs. Kierra Outlin led the Lady Bears with 13 digs and Jourdan Lemons finished with a team-high 15 assists.
The Lady Bears return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 5, when they make a return trip to crosstown rival Towson for a non-conference match at 7 p.m. at the Towson Center. Morgan State dropped a 3-0 decision to the Tigers last Friday during Day 1 of the Battle of Baltimore, played at Towson.
