DAYTONA, Fla. – A defense that stopped everything a week ago suddenly had trouble. Bethune-Cookman's offense registered over 400 yards of offense to help snap Morgan State's 3-game winning streak.
Isidore Jackson rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown, and Jackie Wilson ran for three touchdowns as Bethune-Cookman eased past Morgan State 49-23 Saturday before a Homecoming crowd of 9,649 at Municipal Stadium.
Wilson finished 10-of-15 for 186 yards for the Wildcats (6-3, 4-2) who finished the ballgame with seven rushing touchdowns.
Travis Davidson had a 44-yard rushing touchdown and rushed for a game-high 133 yards on 17 carries to lead Morgan State (5-4, 4-2). Freshman quarterback
Seth Higgins completed 15 of 26 passes for 178 yards, including two touchdowns and he had two passes intercepted.
The Bears were outgained 476-310 and played Bethune-Cookman tough during the early going as they trailed 14-10 in the first half. The 'Cats outscored the Bears 21-0 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
MSU's defense which allowed just 2 rushing yards last week against Delaware State, had a much tougher time keeping the 'Cats ground attack in check. The 290 yards allowed were the most yielded by the Bears since Oct. 30, 2010 when Florida A&M recorded 251 rushing yards.
Wilson scored the first points of the game on a 1-yard run in the first quarter, and added touchdown runs of 4 and 45 in the third quarter. Johnathan Moment added to the ground barrage with nine carries for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
After halftime, it was one-sided: Bethune outgained Morgan State 302-190 in the final 30 minutes.
B-CU scored the initial points of the game following a sack and fumble recovery by Ryan Davis on the Morgan 37. It took the 'Cats 8-plays and just over 3 minutes before Wilson scored on a keeper. Sven Hurd's extra point gave the 'Cats a 7-0 lead at the 10:16 mark of the first quarter.
The Bears responded on the ensuing drive when Higgins connected with
Tyrone Hendrix for a 46-yard touchdown pass. Ervin Gonzalez knotted the game at 7-7 with 5:40 remaining in the first quarter.
A short punt midway through the second quarter gave the Bears good field position at the B-CU 46. Higgins proceeded to drive the Bears down to the 'Cats 5 yard line where they were forced to settle for a 23 yard field goal by Gonzalez, giving MSU a 10-7 lead with 6:04 left in the half.
Late in the second quarter, Wilson completed a 31-yard pass to wideout Eddie Poole and MSU cornerback
Joe Rankin was penalized for pass interference to help give the 'Cats 1
st and 10 at the Bears' 35. Three plays later, Moment broke a 28-yard touchdown run to help lift B-CU to a 14-10 halftime lead.
