BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 21, 2011)-The Morgan State Lady Bears won a wild one on Sunday afternoon, defeating host Hampton, 3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 15-13) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North Division match at Holland Hall for second-place in the league standings.
The victory marked a season-high five straight for the Lady Bears (8-17, 6-3 MEAC), who last recorded a five-match winning streak in 2007.
Morgan State had five Lady Bears set career or season highs, while two other players recorded double-doubles. Janelle Wilson led the way with a career-high 14 kills and tied a career-high eight blocks and Ngebui (Natalie) Chafeh tallied a career-high 55 assists, a career-high seven blocks and added seven kills. Kylin Ellison had a season-high 14 digs, while Zuri Smith totaled a season-high 12 kills.
Jourdan Lemons led the Lady Bears with a career-high 21 digs, Erin Cox finished with 20 digs and 13 kills, while Kierra Outlin also notched a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs, as Morgan State swept the season series over Hampton and improved to 36-2 all-time against the Lady Pirates.
Hampton (10-12, 5-4 MEAC) was led by Krista Kraskura, who tallied a match-high 22 kills and 18 digs. Mianna Armstrong added 21 kills and a match-high 28 digs for the Lady Pirates. Sheileen Pagan finished with 28 digs for Hampton, who had 98 digs as a team. Lihi Elkayam had 13 digs and a team-high 38 assists.
Morgan State returns to action on Friday, Nov. 4 when it travels to Princess Anne, Md. to take on Maryland Eastern Shore. First serve is at 7 p.m. and will be the final regular season road contest for the Lady Bears.
