DOVER, Del. -- Morgan State did what they had to do on a dreary, windy and rain-soaked day for the Hornet's Homecoming. They protected a slim lead, played solid defense and ran the ball.
In just his fourth college game,
Tracy Martin ran for a game-high 154 yards on 38 carries and scored the only points of the game, helping the Bears grind out a 12-0 victory over Delaware State and stretch their winning streak to three straight.
As a result of the win, the Bears are in a tie for first place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with Norfolk State. MSU's remaining games are against Bethune-Cookman (Nov. 5), Norfolk State (Nov. 12) and Hampton (Nov. 19).
The Bears played smash-mouth football throughout most of the ballgame and simply dominated the time of possession (39:53 - 20:07) -- recording their first shutout since October 7, 2006 when they posted a 32-0 win on the road against North Carolina A&T.
MSU (5-3, 4-1 MEAC) has won four of its last five and the defense has not allowed an opponent to crack the scoreboard for the last seven quarters.
MSU's running game was center stage today due to the weather conditions. The Bears' ground game racked up 289 of the Bears' 314 total offensive yards. Starting running back
Travis Davidson posted 90 yards on 12 carries, while
Andrew King finished with 47 yards.
Martin, a redshirt-freshman from Beltsville (Md.), helped put the Bears on the scoreboard when he pounded into the endzone from 2-yards out with 4:43 left in the second quarter. As a result of facing a stiff wind, the Bears opted to go for a 2-point conversion, but the attempt failed. Morgan led 6-0.
Martin scored on a 5-yard run early on in the fourth quarter (14:27) to help the Bears cushion the lead at 12-0. It turned out to be all the points the Bears would need to remain in first place in the MEAC.
Delaware State had more problems than just trying to put points on the board. The Hornets entered the contest with five of their key players suspended for violation of team rules.
DSU (2-6, 0-5 MEAC) only managed three first downs and was held to 54 total yards (2 rushing yards). Their longest play from scrimmage was a 17-yard pass from Nick Elko to Travis Tarpley midway through the fourth quarter. The Hornets never really threatened to score the entire day.
Freshman quarterback
Seth Higgins spent most of his day handing the ball off to his running backs and finished the game completing 2-of-4 passes for 25 yards.
The Bears will attempt to make it four wins in a row when they face Bethune-Cookman (5-3, 3-2 MEAC) down in Daytona (Fla.) next Saturday.
