Lady Bears Split Season Opener at Winston-Salem State; Fall 5-1, Win 9-5

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Feb. 19, 2010)-The Morgan State softball team began the 2010 season with a non-conference doubleheader split at Winston-Salem State on Friday afternoon at Twin City Fields. The Lady Bears dropped the season opener 5-1, before earning a 9-5 victory in Game 2.

 

WSSU (1-1) finished the opening game scoring five runs on nine hits, while holding Morgan State to a run on three hits. Kayla Woodbury led the hosts with two hits on three at bats. Whitney Hall finished with a home run and two runs scored.

 

Morgan State (1-1) struck first in the opening inning of Game 1, when Devina Brown, who led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, scored on Kriston Gowan's RBI single up the middle.

 

However, the host Lady Rams would shut Morgan State down, holding them to just two more hits and scoreless the rest of the way. The Lady Rams evened the score in the second inning when Hall homered to lead off the inning. WSSU would then go on to score a run in each of the next four innings for the win.

 

Megan Johnson (0-1) went six complete innings, surrendering five runs on nine hits and four walks. Johnson also threw four strikeouts. The Lady Rams' Brittany Lane (1-0) earned the victory, pitching seven innings, while allowing one run on three hits. Lane, who had two walks, recorded six strikeouts.

 

Game 2 was all Morgan State early, as the Lady Bears scored two runs each in the first two innings. The guests then put up a four spot in the top of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 8-1, before allowing three WSSU runs in the bottom of the seventh and holding on for the 9-5 victory.

 

Morgan State scored nine runs on six hits and totaled eight RBI and 10 walks. Tamara Griffin went 2-for-3 with three RBI, including a home run and a run scored, while Kriston Gowan finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored to lead the Lady Bears. Lydia Rodriquez added two hits on four at bats with a run scored and an RBI. Porsche Boddicker earned the victory for Morgan, throwing a career-high 10 strikeouts. Boddicker, who pitched all seven innings, allowed five runs on 11 hits and three walks.

 

The Lady Rams were led by Whitney Hall, who finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Kayla Woodbury added two hits on four at bats and two runs scored. M. Craft, who was charged with the loss, also recorded two hits on four at bats and an RBI. As a pitcher, Craft allowed four runs on one hit, walked four and had two strikeouts in an inning of work.

  

The Lady Bears will travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to take on MEAC South member South Carolina State in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is slated for noon.
