Towson Holds Off Lady Bears, 3-1 in Battle of Baltimore

TOWSON, Md. (Sept. 5, 2009)-Erin Cox tallied a career-high 18 kills and added seven digs, while Macie Wyly recorded a season-high 10 kills, but it wasn't enough, as Morgan State, which thus far played its best volleyball of the weekend, lost to host Towson 3-1 (15-25, 24-26, 25-16, 26-28) on Saturday morning in a Battle of Baltimore match played at the Towson Center.

Christa Rogers finished with 34 assists and added a career- and match-high 18 digs to record a double-double for the Lady Bears, who fell to 1-2 in this year's Baltimore of Baltimore. Ivanti Bush chipped in with 14 digs and Dina Beamon added 12, to help Morgan to a 65-64 advantage in digs.

Towson (5-2) was led by Alysha Fanning, who totaled 14 kills and Amanda Halls, who added 12 kills and a team-high 16 digs. Katee Luecke and Evan Schulz split time at setter, finishing with 27 and 15 assists, respectively.

After dropping the first set, the Lady Bears (3-5) fought to hold a 21-17 lead in the second set. Unfortunately, they would not hold on, as a controversial call by the floor judge, allowed Towson to even the score at 22. Morgan would go in front 24-23 after a kill by Cox, but the host Tigers would score the next three points for the win.

Morgan broke a 12-12 tie in the third set by using a 7-4 run to take a 19-16 lead. But this time the Lady Bears would take care of business, closing out the set on a 6-0 run for the 25-16 win.

The fourth and final frame was back and forth with 17 ties and eight lead changes. Morgan State led 23-21, but Towson scored three straight to take a 24-23 lead. Morgan then went up 25-24 and the set was tied at 26 all, before Towson scored the final two points for the win.

The Tigers notched 10 service aces, with Missy Rohrbaugh leading the way with three aces. However, they also had 12 service errors.

The Lady Bears continued their dominance in the blocks category, out blocking the host Tigers, 8-3. Morgan State, which has out blocked all eight of its opponents this season, was led by Kierra Riley and Dominique Bozier, who each collected four blocks apiece.

Morgan State concludes the Battle of Baltimore with a 3 p.m. match against Maryland.
