Loyola Defeats Lady Bears, 3-0 in Battle of Baltimore

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Sept. 4, 2009)-Morgan State dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-19) non-conference decision to Loyola (Md.) on Friday afternoon in the first match of the Battle of Baltimore at the Wesley Brown Field House at the Naval Academy. The loss ended Morgan's two-match winning streak and dropped the Lady Bears to 2-4 on the season.

Loyola (1-4) was led by Nina Camaioni, who tallied a match-high 18 kills, while Karlee Woodward and Kathryn Dircka added nine and seven kills, respectively. Brittany Born led the Greyhounds with a match-high 17 digs.

Morgan State built an 11-5 lead in the opening set and led 20-17, but the Greyhounds went on a 5-0 run to take a 22-20 lead. Morgan would even the score and 22 all, but Loyola would score the final three points for the win.

The second set was back and forth, until Loyola broke a 13 all tie by scoring the next five points in part of a 10-2 spurt to take a 23-16 advantage. Jourdan Lemons (seven assists) came in for Christa Rogers (12 assists) at setter and sparked a 7-0 run by the Lady Bears, tying the score at 23. But Loyola would finally regroup and score the last two points.

Morgan State would again allow Loyola to score multiple points at a time in the third and final frame. The Lady Bears held a 10-7 lead, but Loyola would score the next five points in the midst of a 9-1 run to pull ahead 16-11. The Lady Bears would get within 14-16, but that was as close as they would get.

Morgan State, which now holds a 13-7 all-time series lead and has lost two straight to the Greyhounds, was led by Ivanti Bush's eight kills and 10 digs. Macie Wyly and Erin Cox each added four kills, while Dina Beamon led the Lady Bears with 14 digs.

 

Rogers finished with a career-high five blocks, including two solo to help Morgan State, which has out blocked all six of its opponents this season, out block Loyola, 7-0.

 

Morgan State returns to action with a 3 p.m. match against host Navy.
