Lady Bears Fall to Iowa and Army on Final Day of West Point Challenge

WEST POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2009)-Morgan State went 0-2 on the final day of the 2009 West Point Challenge, following back-to-back 3-0 losses to Iowa (25-17, 25-16, 25-16) and host Army (25-9, 25-18, 25-16) on Sunday. With the losses, the Lady Bears finished the tournament tied for third-place with a 1-3 mark.

 

Iowa's Megan Schipper tallied a match-high 16 kills and added 11 digs and Christina Meister finished with a match-high 16 digs to lead the Hawkeye's.

 

Iowa (8-4) finished with 47 kills and had a hitting percentage of .287. Morgan State, which was held to 20 kills, committed 19 errors and finished with a hitting percentage of .009 for the match.

 

Ivanti Bush led Morgan State with six kills, while Delissa Carline led the Lady Bears with 12 digs. Cheryl Savoy and Rhyan Shy each added 10 digs. Jourdan Lemons finished with 18 assists and added a match-high four blocks.

 

Against Army, the Lady Bears were limited to 24 kills, including six in the third set. Erin Cox tallied 12 kills, while Shy led the team with a match-high 15 digs.

 

Army (11-3), which went unbeaten during the tournament, was led by Amanda Rowell (11 kills, four blocks) and Rachel Dunn (nine kills). The Black Knights finished the match with a hitting percentage of .380, while recording 49 kills, including 18 each in the second and third sets. Francine Vasquez totaled a team-high nine digs and Maureen Bannon finished with 31 assists.

 

Morgan State (5-13) returns to the court with a non-conference match at American on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C.
