Lady Bears Defeat Davidson, 3-1; Earn First Win of Season

Morgan State 3, Davidson 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (Aug. 29, 2009)-Erin Cox notched a team-high 13 kills and Ivanti Bush added 10 to lead Morgan State to a 3-1 non-conference win over Davidson to close out the NC State Hilton RTP Classic. The win ended a six-match losing skid dating back to last season, while also ending an 11-match losing streak against non-conference foes.

Davidson (0-3), which was led by Sarabeth Peele and Ally Miller, who both recorded 14 kills apiece, finished with a total of 53 kills for the match to Morgan State's 38. However, it was 30 attack errors along with 14 service aces by the Wildcats that proved to be costly.

Morgan State which improved to 1-3 on the season, its best start through four matches since the 2006 campaign, received a match-high 31 assists from Christa Rogers and a team-high 12 digs by Dina Beamon. Kierra Riley finished with five blocks, while Cox and Macie Wyly added four and three blocks, respectively, to help the Lady Bears, who have out blocked all four of their opponents this season, to a 10-8.5 blocking advantage over Davidson.

Morgan State overcame a 14-11 deficit in the first set, by scoring the next seven points to claim an 18-14 lead, before cruising to a 25-17 victory. The Lady Bears then nearly blew a 22-18 lead in the second set, but held on for a 25-22 win to take a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

The Wildcats would recover and claimed a 25-17 win in set three. Down 18-14 in the fourth frame, Davidson would even the score at 23 all. But a service error by the Wildcats, followed by a block assist by Riley and Cox, secured the win for the Lady Bears.

Morgan State returns to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 1, when they play host to Lehigh in a non-conference match at 4 p.m. at Hill Field House. The match will mark the home opener for the Lady Bears, who haven't won a home opener since 2006.
