RALEIGH, N.C. (Aug. 28, 2009)-Erin Cox recorded a match- and career-high 17 kills, while adding 10 digs to earn her first double-double of the season, but it wasn't enough, as Morgan State dropped a 3-2 (18-25, 25-22, 27-25, 15-25, 5-15) decision against Campbell in its second match of the NC State Hilton RTP Classic at Reynolds Coliseum.
Morgan State (0-2) bounced back from a 25-18 loss in the first set with a 25-22 victory in Game 2, its first set win of the season. The Lady Bears overcame a 13-9 deficit, by going on a 12-4 run, capped off by a kill by Macie Wyly, giving Morgan a 21-17 advantage. The Camels would counter with a 5-1 spurt to even the set at 22 all. But the Lady Bears, who this time would not be denied, scored the final three points, including a solo block by Dominique Bozier for the win.
The Lady Bears held a 21-13 advantage in the third set after an ace by Ivanti Bush, but Campbell would go on an 11-2 run to take a 24-23 lead. The Lady Bears would score four of the next five points in the set for the victory.
After forcing a fifth set by claiming a 25-15 victory in the fourth frame, the Camels scored nine straight points to break a 2-2 tie and take a commanding 11-2 lead in the fifth set.
Campbell (2-0) was led by Emily Werner, who finished with 10 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Allyson Goldbach had a match-high 15 digs and Hope Leatigaga collected 29 assists.
Bush had a team-high 14 digs and added nine kills, while Christa Rogers tallied a double-double with a match-high 34 assists and 10 digs for Morgan State. Rogers also added five kills, four blocks and a match-high four service aces.
The Lady Bears return to action on Saturday, Aug. 29, when they take on Charleston Southern at 10 a.m., before concluding the tournament with a 2 p.m. match against Davidson.
