Men's Track Story
COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 30, 2009)-The Morgan State women's track and field team, began the 2009 season over the weekend at the USC Weems Baskin Invitational held at Weems Baskin Track on the campus of the University of South Carolina on Saturday. The Lady Bears finished the day with nine athletes placing in the top five in their events and 15 athletes who placed within the top 10.
Senior shot putter Leitawsha Bronson earned the Lady Bears only first-place finish, as she captured the shot put with a toss of 14.01m. Fellow shot putter Candace Shirley placed ninth (11.48m), while Allison Randall, who missed out on a top 10 finish, came in 11th with a throw of 11.04m. Randall, however, would finish second in the discus with a throw of 44.76m.
The Morgan State sprinters had a good overall outing, as three placed in the top five of their respective races, while a combined eight placed within the top 10. Avionne Sloan came in second in the 400 meter dash in a time of 55.72, while Vivian McCollum (58.26) and Tyshia Oliver (1:00.11) finished sixth and eighth, respectively.
Jamia Robinson was clocked at 25.47 in the 200 meter dash to place second, while Tanisha Kendrick finished eighth in a time of 26.44. Ashley Hines placed third in the 100 meter dash in a time of 12.10, and Tendai Hill (12.39) and Robinson (12.45) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.
The Lady Bears' Lauren Campbell and Kamice Small were the only Morgan State representatives in the 400 meter hurdles, and they placed third and fifth, respectively, in the event. Campbell finished in a time of 1:06.32 for third, while Small ran a time of 1:07.25, to place fifth.
Morgan State returns to the track on Saturday, April 4th, when they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take part in the Aggie Relays, hosted by North Carolina A&T.
