BALTIMORE, Md. – Morgan State University's George Howard picked up an additional post-season honor on Wednesday when he was named to The Sports Network Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-America Team.
Howard, a senior linebacker from Chesapeake (Va.), was a second-team selection and one of just three players from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference named to the prestigious squad. The former Deep Creek H.S. product became the second Bear to earn the TSN All-America honor. Former linebacker Jarrell Guyton was a member of the 2008 Team.
“It's truly a great honor to be included on one of the most elite groups in the country,” Howard said.
“I would like to thank God, the support of my family, Coach Hill and the entire football staff at MSU, past and present, who afforded me this opportunity.
“This is such a tremendous honor for George and we're very proud of him and the hard work that he has put in since coming to Morgan State,” MSU head coach Donald Hill-Eley said. “The young man worked hard ever since joining our program and I'm very happy for him. It's a great honor for the program as well to get national recognition.”
Howard, who was named 2009 MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, completed his career by leading the MEAC in tackles with 130 (11.8 avg/g) including 73 solo and 57 assisted. He finished the season ranked fourth in the FCS in tackles per game.
“The Hitman” recorded nine tackles for a loss of 40 yards, one pass break up, two quarterback hurries and three forced fumbles this season and had a career-high 18 tackles in a win against cross-town rival Towson.
Safety Terrell Whitehead of Norfolk State was selected to the first-team defense, while Florida A&M's Leroy Vann was a special teams first-team selection.
