Ivanti Bush ended her Hill Field House career with 11 kills and 17 digs against Delaware State during Friday's 'Senior Night'.
BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 6, 2009)-The Lady Bears volleyball team closed out their 2009 home slate with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 18-25) loss to Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division match at Hill Field House. With the loss the Lady Bears ended the home campaign with a 3-4 record.
Cassandra Joyner notched a double-double with a team-high 15 kills and 10 digs, while Erica Tajchman added 12 kills to help the visiting Hornets spoil Morgan State's 'Senior Night.' Sarah Wheatcraft also had a double-double of 10 kills and 15 digs. Sonja Banicevic led the guests with a match-high 22 digs and Martina Ferrari totaled a match-high 40 assists.
Friday night's league match against the Hornets marked the final home contest for seniors Ivanti Bush and Hilary Tutman. Bush finished with a double-double of 11 kills and a team-high 17 digs to record her fourth double-double of the season. Bush's 17 digs moved her into 11th-place all-time at Morgan State with 741, one dig shy of 10th. Erin Cox led the Lady Bears with 14 kills, two service aces, seven digs and two blocks. Christa Rogers also tallied a double-double, finishing with 32 assists and 10 digs. Dina Beamon collected 16 digs.
Delaware State (17-12, 7-2 MEAC), which swept the regular season series and has defeated Morgan State for the fourth straight time, finished the match with a hitting percentage of .108, while holding the Lady Bears to .068.
Led by Dominique Bozier's match-high five blocks, the Lady Bears were able to out block Delaware State, 8-3.
Morgan State (8-21, 3-6 MEAC) will close out the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 8, when the Lady Bears travel to Hampton, Va. to take on the Lady Pirates in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North Division match at 1 p.m. at Holland Hall. With Hampton defeating Howard in five sets on Friday, Morgan State is currently in fifth-place in the standings behind No. 4 Hampton.
For the second straight season the Lady Bears again find themselves in a must win situation against Hampton. Last season Morgan State needed a win over the Lady Pirates in either three or four sets and instead suffered a five-set loss and was eliminated from last season's MEAC Championships.
The winner of Sunday's match will secure the fourth and final spot in the North Division for the upcoming MEAC Championships hosted by Coppin State (Nov. 20-22).
