Christa Rogers recorded a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs.
BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 1, 2009)-Christa Rogers notched her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with a match-high 25 assists and adding 10 digs, while Erin Cox totaled a match-high 10 kills to lead Morgan State to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-8) sweep of Coppin State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North Division match on Sunday evening at the Coppin Center.
The Lady Bears' win was their 44th straight over Coppin State and completed Morgan State's season sweep of the Eagles. The victory also moved Morgan State back into fourth-place in the league standings, following Hampton's 3-0 loss at home to Maryland Eastern Shore. The Lady Bears and Hampton which are battling for the fourth and final spot in the North Division in order to advance to the MEAC Championship, will square off in the season finale on Sunday, Nov. 8 in Hampton, Va.
Morgan State, which improved to 8-20 overall and 3-5 in the MEAC, also received eight kills from Kierra Riley, who recorded a match-high .545 hitting percentage with just two errors on 11 attempts. Dominique Bozier and Hilary Tutman also added six kills apiece. Tutman's performance fell shy of her career-high seven kills, which she set last season at Missouri-Kansas City (9/5). Dina Beamon led all players with 14 digs.
Coppin State (1-27, 0-8 MEAC) was led by Kanishia Sheppard, who finished with five kills and three digs. Jazmin Brown recorded a team-high 10 digs, while Tricia Baczek and Mercedes Maynard-Randall each tallied six assists each.
The Lady Bears finished the match with 33 kills and a hitting percentage of .217, while Coppin State recorded 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .000. The Lady Bears who in their last match collected a season-high 13 service aces at Howard, finished with 10 aces against the Eagles. Cheryl Savoy led the team with a match-high three aces, which ties her career-high.
Morgan State, which has won back-to-back matches only once this season, will look for its second straight win when it plays host to Delaware State on Friday, Nov. 6 for Senior Night at Hill Field House. The match will be the final home contest for seniors Ivanti Bush and Hilary Tutman. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
