BALTIMORE -- Reggie Holmes scored 19 points and Morgan State snapped a four-game losing streak in a 62-48 victory over Coppin State in the conference opener for both teams on Saturday at Hill Field House.
Holmes shot 6-for-16 from the field, knocked down 4-of-11 3-pointers and pulled down six rebounds to help the Bears defeat the Eagles for the third time in the last four meetings.
Rogers Barnes had 12 points and Kevin Thompson collected his second double-double of the season by collecting 10 points and 10 rebounds for Morgan State (3-6, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), which trailed only twice in the game.
Junior guard Joseph Morgan electrified the crowd with a dunk midway through the first half that helped ignite an 8-0 run. Morgan State led 28-19 at halftime.
The Bears shot 41.1 percent from the field (23 of 56) and made 5 of their 20 shots from beyond the arc. Coppin State had a dreadful night and made just 17-of-57 shots (29.8 percent) and only 3-of-17 on 3-point attempts.
Jordan Lee scored 13 points for the Eagles (1-5, 0-1), who have lost four straight games.
Tywain McKee, who entered the game averaging 18.5 points per game, was held to 10 points (4-16 FG) and finished with four turnovers.
Morgan State held a commanding 50-33 advantage on the boards and scored 20 points off of second chance opportunities.
A 3-pointer by Holmes gave Morgan State its largest lead, 36-23, with 14:22 left in the game. Coppin State did not come within nine the rest of the way.
The 48 points scored by the Eagles marked their second-lowest point total ever scored against Morgan State behind only the 44 they scored during the 1979-80 season.
Marquise Katley recorded 11 boards and eight points, while Jermaine Bolden added a game-high six assists.
"I'm just glad we got a win," Morgan State coach Todd Bozeman. "We've only won three ballgames [and lost six times], so it's a start."
Morgan State returns to action when they travel to Chicago (Ill.) to face DePaul on Wednesday, December 10th. The game is set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
