HAMPTON, Va. (Sept. 26, 2006)-It’s been said ‘that all good things come to an end.’ For the Morgan State women’s volleyball team that is not yet the case when it comes to playing Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Hampton, as the Lady Bears improved to 27-0 all-time against Hampton, following their 3-0 (30-28, 32-30, 30-28) win on Tuesday evening at Holland Hall. The match did not count toward the league standings.
Morgan’s Jeniqua Moran tallied her first career double-double, as she finished with a team-high 12 kills and added 13 digs, while Ivanti Bush notched her seventh double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs and totaled a match-high eight blocks.
Despite the victory, Morgan State (6-6) by no means was on top of its game. As a team, the Lady Bears committed 29 errors and finished the match with a .176 hitting percentage. The squad also had seven service errors, as well as seven receive errors. Morgan State did record 91 digs compared to 38 by Hampton and held a 12.5 to 7.5 block advantage over the Lady Pirates.
In Game 1, the Lady Bears held seven-point leads of 19-12 and 27-20, but the Lady Pirates battled back to pull within a point at 28-29, before dropping the opener 30-28.
Hampton (4-8) scored the first five points of Game 2, but the guests countered with a 21-12 spurt to take a 21-17 lead. Hampton reclaimed the lead at 29-28, but an attack error on the Lady Pirates’ Aminah Charles evened the score at 29, keeping Morgan in the game. The Lady Bears then scored three of the final four points to take the second game, 32-30.
Game 3 was another back-and-forth battle, as the Lady Bears were able to buckle down and hold on for the 30-28 victory.
Nicole Williams collected her first career double-double as a Lady Bear with 32 assists and 17 digs. Esther Johnson recorded seven kills to tie former Lady Bear, Yolanda McGirt (1999-2002) for second on the career charts in kills with 1,137. Johnson also added 14 digs and had two blocks. Ashley Preston finished with a match-high 20 digs.
Hampton, which dropped its second consecutive match, was led by Morgan Williams’ 15 kills, while Chavanca Hoskins finished with a double-double with 11 kills, a team-high 15 digs and three service aces. Jasmin Elder had 34 assists.
The Lady Bears are off until Thursday, Sept. 28, when they travel to Dover, Del., to take on Delaware State at 7 p.m.
