CATONSVILLE, Md. (Sept. 23, 2005)-Esther Johnson tallied a match-high 20 kills and Courtney Bruner posted her best outing of the season adding a double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs, but it wasn’t enough for the visiting Lady Bears, who lost to UMBC 1-3 (22-30, 30-28, 27-30, 26-30) in a non-conference match Friday night at RAC Arena.
UMBC (6-8) was led by Sarah Ball, who recorded a double-double with a team-high 17 kills and 14 digs and Christine Skala had a team-high 20 digs.
The Lady Bears (3-12) finished with 51 kills and 34 errors for a .105 hitting percentage, while the host Retrievers had 47 kills and 28 errors for a hitting percentage of .120. Morgan was also out blocked by a margin of nine to five.
Ashley Preston led Morgan with a match-high 26 digs and Mandisa Richardson collected a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Johnson added nine digs to go along with her 20 kills, falling short of a double-double. Sharleen Browne finished with 47 assists.
Morgan State returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 27, when it visits Howard in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
